SCD FOOD

When I first began the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), I was totally overwhelmed. Although I’m very familiar with most of the major grocery stores in my area, I was totally unprepared to find SCD-legal food products. I had no idea where to find them and it took some investigation.

I live in the Los Angeles, California area, specifically in Calabasas Hills. Perhaps others on SCD live nearby. If so, maybe this list of stores and their SCD-legal foods will help others.

Legend: $ = reasonable prices, $$ = moderate prices, $$$ = more expensive, $$$$ = pricey

ALBERTSON’S – 26521 Agoura Rd., Calabasas, CA 91302 – ($$)

SCD-legal foods: They usually have sales on 85%/15% hamburger meat and chicken. And if you have a hankering for out-of-season produce, they usually have it.

GELSON’S – 2734 Townsgate Rd., Westlake Village, CA 91361 – ($$)

SCD-legal foods: Dry Curd Cottage Cheese – Friendship Farmer Cheese.

Gelson’s also carries frozen, diced  butternut squash and zucchini. I sure love the ease of frozen veggies.

MADDY’S MARKET – 26767 Agoura Rd, Calabasas, CA 91302 – ($$$)

SCD-legal foods: Purity Farms Organic Ghee and raw cow’s milk or goat milk for your 24-hour yogurt.

Maddy’s has Coconut Secret Raw Coconut Flour and they carry the Artisana brand products – they have the Raw Cacao Butter,  as well as their Cashew, Macadamia, and Pecan Nut Butters. Yum! Also they carry grass-fed beef, although I usually wait for a sale.

Maddy’s Market also has an excellent juice bar.

SUGAR FREE MARKETS – 23164 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills, CA – ($)

They carry sugar-free and gluten-free products and delivery is available if you order $50 or more.

SCD-legal foods: They have Blanched Almond Flour – 1 lb for $3.99. That price can’t be beat.  Unsweetened coconut flakes.

TRADER JOE’S – 28941 Canwood St., Agoura Hills, CA 91301 – ($)

SCD-legal foods: What doesn’t Trader Joe’s carry?

Their selection of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables is awesome. Trader Joes also carries a wide selection of frozen fruits and vegetables, like frozen pineapple pieces, blueberries, raspberries, mangoes and strawberries;  frozen French green beans (haricot vert), broccoli florets and asparagus spears.

Trader Joes stocks raw almonds, pecans, cashews and walnuts at great prices. They carry Just Almond Meal, which is coarser than almond flour. Almond butter and peanut butter.

Trader Joes also recently began selling frozen grass-fed beef.

Olive oil and coconut oil, oils of all types. Jars of capers, cans of tomatoes. Many varieties of honey, as well as creamed honey – this product isn’t runny and must be spread on bananas, etc, but can be melted. It is delicious.
